Some of the Abu's saying high speed were a 6.3:1 retrieve. Abu reels foots were smooth foot until 1973 at which time then checkered on the bottom of the reel foot came into play. Color of spool was gray on early reels and changed to silver color in early 60's. 4 screw sideplates were used on the earlier reels. Late 80's to early 90's-3 pair of numbers separated by hyphen. The 80's are same as 70's but in the 80's, it'll be the first 2 numbers. 6 figure number 71xxxx OR xx71xx with 70 as the first 2 or the middle 2 will give you the year. 6 figure numbers xx06xx is mid-60's replace the 0 in the middle with the number 6. 6 figure serialized 179911 is from the 50's to early 60's. From 1970 onwards the numbering changed to YYMMXX instead of MMYYXX - so now the production year (YY) comes first, followed by the month (MM) ending with the production run/version (ZZ).ĥ figure numbers XXXXX given to the Record Ambassedeurs. The reel foot is the part of the reel (foot) that faces the rod when correctly mounted on a rod.

Many ABU reels and some RECORD reels have 5 or 6 digit serial numbers on them - also called Foot Numbers b/c the numbers always shows as imprinted/stamped digits under the reel foot.

Helped me locate a few parts for older ones. I always find the following info handy when dating old Abu's.

The plastic block was put on the old Abus to decrease line capacity and increase spool speed.the bigger the spool the more line it takes in in fewer cranks.the older models had a very thin spool with huge line capacities.really not needed.this is one of the first models Abu made with a ball bearing in it.I have a couple 5500c was always a prize over the old 5000 red reels.circa prob 60s to early 70s.dependable and bullet proof uses the plastic centrifigal brakes.those are the plastic pegs sliding over the 2 medal shafts on the side of the spool.if you are a proficient caster you can remove them for a free spool mode.for further casting just watch for backlashes.high speed is a relative term for this old reel.the older models were very slow.but I'd prob put it up there with a normal 6-3 reel like the C3.PS you should be able to remove the bearings and replace them with a newer C5 bearing to make yours a 5500C5 they are the same size and slide on and off.did this to a few also.
